Latest NewsMEGADETH’s Dave Mustaine calls for 2017 Big Four tour
///  Date : 07th December, 2016  ///

megadeth_dave-mustaineMegadeth frontman Dave Mustaine says he’d be open to a repeat of the ‘Big Four‘ tour in 2017 and thinks it would work well with all four bands currently promoting new albums. Mustaine – a former member of Metallica – has reviewed Metallica’s ‘Hardwired… To Self-Destruct‘ for Metal Hammer and he says it’s “really cool” that they, along with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, have recently issued new records.

The four thrash bands shared a bill for seven shows as part of the Sonisphere Festival series in 2010 and Anthrax bassist Frank Bello recently said he’d love to see it happen again. And in 2014, Mustaine himself said he was keen on the idea.

Now Mustaine says : “To have all of the Big Four releasing great new records within 12 months or so, that’s really cool. Now the big question is whether or not the powers-that-be are gonna allow for the four of us to go and do some more Big Four dates. We’ve got a lot of great stuff going on and we’ve got some stuff we’re setting up for Asia and the United States for next year, but if Big Four stuff presented itself we’d probably yield to that because it’s a lot more fun and it’s such an event that it takes precedence over just another tour, so to speak.” He continues : “When fans get to have four of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time on the same stage, that’s something you can tell your grandkids about.”

Megadeth released their 15th album ‘Dystopia‘ in January of this year, while Anthrax issued their 11th effort ‘For All Kings‘ the following month. Slayer’s 12th album ‘Repentless‘ was issued last year. Metallica have just released their 10th studio album ‘Hardwired… to Self-Destruct‘ last month.

Latest NewsAce Frehley return to KISS is ‘possibility’
///  Date : 04th December, 2016  ///

ace-frehleyAce Frehley says it’s possible he could return to KISS for farewell tour : ‘I’ve always been friends with those guys’. Speculation has increased in recent months that the guitarist might commence a third stint with the band after frontman Paul Stanley guested on his solo album. And Frehley insists his relationship with his former colleagues has never been as poor as it was perceived to be in public. He co-founded KISS in 1973 and first left in 1982, returning in 1996 and bowing out again four years later.

When asked about the rumors concerning him re-entering KISS for a final tour, the guitarist stated, “I haven’t been contacted. I’m not ruling it out. It’s a possibility, I guess.” Noting the decision does not start with him, Frehley continued, “But the ball’s in Paul [Stanley] and Gene’s [Simmons] court. If that’s something that they would like to do to end off the career of KISS, I think it could be… if it was handled correctly, it could be great.”

Latest NewsDani Filth on next CRADLE OF FILTH album : Cross between ‘Hammer Of The Witches’ and ‘Cruelty And The Beast’
///  Date : 03rd December, 2016  ///

danifilth-cradleoffilthAnthony Morgan of Metal Forces recently conducted an interview with Cradle Of Filth and Devilment frontman Dani Filth.

On Cradle Of Filth’s next studio album being released in September 2017 :

“It’s gonna be delivered the second week of May, and the reason for… I mean, it’s not being pushed out or anything like that. Whatever we release, it’s usually about two years afterwards. I think it’s just the fact that I’ve got another band makes it look like it turns around quite quickly, but it has to be released in September because of new management planning this big world tour which has to start in America on a certain date.

So, the album has to be delivered and released… It all has to fall into a certain place. You can’t just go ‘Oh, we missed our deadline. Sorry,’ because otherwise, you miss your slot with releasing and with the record company, and everything they’ve got planned. So yeah, we’re free to do what we want for a certain amount of months, but then it all has to fit into a schedule.”

///  Date : 02nd December, 2016  ///

fivefingerdeathpunchFollowing a bizarre few days for Ivan Moody, Five Finger Death Punch have revealed plans to continue their tour with All That Remains vocalist Phil Labonte filling in for Moody on their remaining 2016 shows.

The band is in the midst of a co-headlining tour in the U.S. with Shinedown, and just last week, they cut short a show in Worcester when Moody revealed to the audience that his “mother” was “passing along today”. Bassist Chris Kael later apologized to the crowd, stating that they needed to be with their singer, who had left the stage in an emotional state.

However, it was later revealed by his sister that Moody’s mother was not ailing, nor was any member of his family and he addressed the situation while onstage in Newark, telling the crowd there that he had “a mental moment that had nothing to do with alcohol, drugs or any of it”. He also spoke about Kanye West’s recent mental exhaustion and revealed that he “was starting to get it now”.

A statement from the band reads : “With only 8 shows to go on their current U.S. co-headlining arena tour with Shinedown, Five Finger Death Punch announced today that they have decided to honor their commitment to the fans and finish out the current tour with All That Remains vocalist Phil Labonte filling in for Five Finger Death Punch frontman Ivan Moody who has fallen ill.”

Latest NewsCARCASS is shooting to have a new album out by the end of 2017
///  Date : 01st December, 2016  ///

carcass_bill-steerAfter reuniting in 2007 from its 1995 breakup, Carcass has successfully reintegrated itself into the new metal world. The band dropped ‘Surgical Steel‘ in 2013, the b-sides EP Surgical Remission / Surplus Steel in 2014, and now Carcass is trying to get an album out by the end of 2017.

Guitarist Bill Steer tells Dead Rhetoric that the band will have a lot of free time in 2017, and is aiming to get one together for the end of next year.

“We’ve got a couple of festivals next year, so in other words : an enormous amount of free time. Once we get started, we work very quickly, especially with Jeff. Jeff’s got a real work ethic, so we’ll have something we feel is in very good shape to play to him, then he comes in and critiques that. It’s just like a distillation process. Sometimes it takes a while for a song to reach a point where we’re all happy with it, other times, it happens on that day. I think we should have an album that’s available by the end of the year [2017].”

///  Date : 24th November, 2016  ///

mastodonAtlanta progressive metallers Mastodon have finished recording the follow-up to 2014’s ‘Once More ‘Round The Sun‘. Once again, Mastodon worked with famed producer Brendan O’Brien, who first collaborated with the band on their 2009 groundbreaking concept album ‘Crack The Skye‘. Mastodon bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders tells Metal Hammer : “We’ve got it in the bag. We’re just putting a timeline together of when and where. So that’s all coming together now. So 2017’s going to be an incredibly busy and fruitful year in the world of Mastodon. I’m fortunate to be able to say that. I’m very excited for what the New Year will bring.”

Regarding the musical direction of Mastodon’s next album, guitarist Bill Kelliher told GuitarMania : “It’s a little bit of the same as the last album, but I think it goes even deeper in certain areas — a couple of more psychedelic parts, a little more technical parts. There are a couple of new places we haven’t gone before. So it’s just kind of a continuation of the last record to me, but even deeper.”

Latest NewsKILLSWITCH ENGAGE release fiery “Cut Me Loose” music video
///  Date : 21th November, 2016  ///

killswitch-engageEarlier this year, metalcore vets Killswitch Engage released ‘Incarnate‘, an album bursting with the band’s clever balance of aggression, tension and emotion. Singer Jesse Leach‘s personal and relatable lyrics have propelled tracks like “Hate By Design” and “Strength of the Mind” and his words get some intense visuals in the new music video for “Cut Me Loose”.

The lyrics to the song are despondent and ones of feeling restricted. The video captures the band fittingly playing in a barren, white-sand desert, mirroring the emotional impact of Leach’s words. As the band releases their demons in the inhospitable climate, the video alternates back and forth to a clips of fire engulfing wooden furniture that has been knocked to the floor. We get the story as an immolated man is shown running in reverse and as the song continues, we learn the man doused himself in alcohol and set himself ablaze. Fire so often symbolizes rebirth, cleansing and purification and the breakdown at the end of the song that finds Leach barking the title throughout aligns with this notion of sweeping it away and starting over.

Killswitch Engage will be releasing ‘Beyond the Flames: Home Video Part II‘ this Friday (Nov. 25). The concert film / CD documents Leach’s return to the band as well as his first stint with the group and the reasons leading up to that first departure. The release will also boast footage from 17 separate performances around the world and will be part of the Black Friday Record Store Day event.

Latest NewsBLACK SABBATH album, festival shows possible says Tony Iommi
///  Date : 20th November, 2016  ///

black-sabbath_tony-iommiTony Iommi says it’s possible that Black Sabbath could record another album and make festival appearances after farewell tour. The metal icons’ The End trek will be completed with two shows in their home city of Birmingham on February 2 and 4, bringing their career on the road to an end after 49 years of action. One of the main reasons for calling a halt is the guitarist’s health concerns after his battle against cancer.

Iommi tells Talk Is Jericho : “It’s going be such a weird thing because Black Sabbath’s always been my life. Everything fell by the wayside to Black Sabbath – all the marriages and everything, because I’m always out working and always doing this, always in the studio. It’s going be pretty weird, that last show. I don’t know how anybody’s going to feel. And after that, who knows?”

“I’ve been asked, ‘What are you going to do after this?’ Well, I don’t know. As long as it’s not world touring, I’m all right. It’s just the traveling that gets me. Since I was ill, it really does affect me now.” He adds : “I don’t want to stop playing. For me, it’s the touring now. There’s a day when you’ve got to go, Look, we’ve done it for almost 50 years. It’s time to re-look at it.”

Asked about the chance of festival appearances in the future, Iommi says : “I wouldn’t write that off, if one day that came about. That’s possible. Or even doing an album, because then you’re in one place. But I don’t know if that would happen.”

///  Date : 17th November, 2016  ///

ronnie-james-dioPreviously unreleased Ronnie James Dio material is set to launch next year, his widow Wendy Dio has confirmed.

Rhino Records issued the ‘A Decade Of Dio‘ box set earlier this year, which contained his first six albums from 1983 until 1993. Wendy, who was also Dio’s longtime manager, says there are “precious” tapes in the archives still to be issued – though she’d have to cut through some red tape to release her late husband’s work with Rainbow.

She tells : “I have four albums that I own after that box set, and we have some precious things in the archives, which we’re going to put out and add on there, and I think Rhino will put it out next year.”

When asked whether there is unreleased video of the singer, Wendy replies : “Oh yeah. I’m talking all the way back. I’ve actually got stuff from Rainbow we’re not allowed to put out, but we’ve got stuff. We videoed almost every show.”

Latest NewsMETALLICA’s Kirk Hammett : GUNS N’ ROSES have ‘turned into somewhat of a Nostalgia Act’
///  Date : 16th November, 2016  ///

kirk-hammett-axl-roseHave Guns N’ Roses become a nostalgia act? Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett thinks so and he believes the current state of GN’R is “kind of sad.”

Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan reunited this year to embark on one of rock’s most gigantic tours. Over a million tickets were sold in North America alone, with almost a $117 million gross coming in from just 25 performances. GN’R are now gigging throughout South America and outlets report the “Not in This Lifetime” dates will continue worldwide well into 2017.

Though Guns’ tour celebrated the partial return of the ‘Appetite for Destruction‘ and ‘Use Your Illusion‘ lineups, the iconic rock band actually played three-to-four ‘Chinese Democracy‘ songs each night. Guns N’ Roses’ sixth album came out in 2008, the same year Metallica’s ‘Death Magnetic‘ was unleashed. And though Metallica are currently jamming a few tracks from their upcoming ‘Hardwired… to Self-Destruct‘ album, almost none of the thrash legends’ 21st century material has been performed live in the last couple of years.

In a new interview with the LA Times, Kirk Hammett spoke about Guns N’ Roses’ reunion tour. “Unfortunately, they’ve turned into somewhat of a nostalgia act, which to me is kind of sad,” Hammett said. As for the importance of writing new material, James Hetfield shared, “I don’t want to think we’re trying to stay young by writing new stuff, but it makes us feel relevant. It makes us feel like we’re still progressing.”

satyriconSatyricon is all geared up to record and release a new album in 2017. The album will be the band’s first in four years, and the first album since frontman Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven‘s diagnosis of a brain tumor in 2015.

According to an interview with Metal Hammer, the band will be recording a new album in a farm outside Oslo, and that the new material will be less aggressive and “more percussive, varied and soulful” than previous efforts.

“When we started getting back in to the rhythm after I was hospitalised, the music changed. I wasn’t so much into what we did earlier – it wasn’t that I didn’t like it, but I didn’t feel it in the same way anymore. A lot of what we did in the beginning is relentless, violent and aggressive. It’s not like it’s sobbing or really sad now, but it’s more percussive, varied and soulful. There’s less emphasis on the aggressive violent part of it.”

What Decibel didn’t tell you was that they were also interviewing those dudes — along with former bassist Lars Rosenberg — for a 25th anniversary Hall of Fame induction on ‘Clandestine’!

It’s not your typical wedding venue. We wanted it to look really grand and ornate, but underneath it all it’s a bit dirty.”

LatestNewsNext NIGHTWISH album to continue ‘Endless Forms’ themes
///  Date : 07th November, 2016  ///

nightwishNightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen predicts their 9th album will continue the themes of ‘Endless Forms Most Beautiful‘ – although he hasn’t written anything yet. ‘Endless Forms Most Beautiful’ is the result of research on evolution and religion – the title is a quote by Charles Darwin, which he used to describe the environment we live in, and the record features a guest appearance by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins.

The band will take a break during 2017 – but the mainman has confirmed that plans are in the diary for 2018, 2019 and 2020. Holopainen describes himself as “completely empty” after several years of hard creative work. “Usually by now I’ve have five or six songs,” he says. “I haven’t felt like doing any, but maybe it will come next year. If it does, that’s great – but if it doesn’t we’re not in any hurry. I will be surprised if inspiration didn’t come next year. I’m not taking any pressure, though. That’s the whole idea of having the year off.”

LatestNewsTony Iommi on BLACK SABBATH’s future : ‘No Touring’ but ‘Maybe’ new music
///  Date : 05th November, 2016  ///

Given the nature of the music business and countless bands that have returned after completing their farewell tours, there’s rightful speculation about the end of the mighty Black Sabbath. The band is one the back end of their ‘The End’ tour which will conclude in early 2017 and while mainman Tony Iommi has reiterated this will indeed by the end of touring, he’s left the door open for other Sabbath opportunities.

In a new interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Iommi reflected on the both the beginning of his Black Sabbath career as well the finality. When asked if he goes on vacation after tour, the riff master responded, “No, a vacation for me is to be at home. But I’m not going to leave the music business. I still want to write and play and I’ll be doing some TV for something over here in England called Guitar Star. But I love the playing, I love gigs, I just can’t travel anymore.”

As for the future of Sabbath, Iommi was noncommittal, offering a simple, “Maybe.” Expanding on this notion, he continued, “As I said, I’ll be doing some writing. Maybe I’ll be doing something with the guys, maybe in the studio, but no touring”. The question of new material is something that has been brought up to Iommi’s other long-term Sabbath bandmates, Ozzy Osbourne and Geezer Butler. Ozzy has expressed a desire to hit the studio for one more solo album following the end of Black Sabbath’s run, but has remained opened to the possibility of recording with Iommi and Butler again.

Black Sabbath’s final shows will take place at the Genting Arena in their native Birmingham, England on Feb. 2 and 4 of 2017.

LatestNewsJUDAS PRIEST is aiming to hit the studio in January
///  Date : 04th November, 2016  ///

judas-priestAccording to guitarist Richie Faulkner in a below interview with Sweetwater Music, the band Judas Priest is aiming to hit the studio in January 2017 and release an album at some point next year!

“…We’ve just been in the studio for a couple of months putting songs together. We haven’t started the recording process yet, but we’re recording demos; we’re recording songs that work without the production to save them, if you know what I mean. But the core value… We’re putting down some grassroots ideas and fleshing them out for the next Priest record. So we’re gonna go into the studio to start recording in January. So it should be out sometime next year. But we’re not touring next year. So we’re gonna be touring, hopefully, in 2018.”

ozzy-osbourneWith the final Black Sabbath show ever locked in for Feb. 4 in the band’s hometown of Birmingham, England, Ozzy Osbourne will be looking to continue his career, returning to the solo format. In an interview with SiriusXM’s Jose Mangin, the Prince of Darkness revealed the work on his next solo record has already begun with some interesting collaborations.

“I’m not retiring, I’m gonna carry on,” Osbourne began. “I’ve been writing with Billy Morrison and Steve Stevens [both guitarists for Billy Idol]. [Steve is] not gonna be in my band, he’s with Billy Idol. But he’s a friend of [Morrison’s] and [Morrison] plays with Billy Idol. I said, ‘I’ve got some ideas,’ and we worked it out. There’s one song that right now is called “Crack Cocaine“. It’s like a bluesy thing.” The singer, who will turn 68 next month, was reluctant to give a timetable for this album’s release, adding, “I don’t wanna say when [it will be out]. I can’t be working the Sabbath thing and my own thing at the same time. I tried that with the Ozzfest; it didn’t work.”

BLACK VEIL BRIDES have ‘nine or ten songs completed’ for new album

black-veil-bridesBlack Veil Brides had begun pre-production work on their followup to their eponymous 2014 record. Singer Andy Biersack, who released an album of his own earlier this year, recently gave an update on Black Veil Brides’ progress, revealing they have “nine or 10 songs completed that are currently in the mixing process”. The frontman broke the news while speaking with Alternative Press, adding, “I don’t think we’ll go too much further; it’s been a process of shedding down to this point. Rather than record 100 songs we didn’t like, we were really able to strip away the stuff that didn’t seem as strong”.

Getting into his contributions, Biersack offered, “It feels like the story I want to tell will be done in the 10 or 11 songs in this record. I can’t tell you how great it is seeing how much Jake [Pitts, guitar] and Jinxx [guitar] have grown as players and songwriters. The future is so bright”.

GREEN DAY’s ‘Revolution Radio’ debuts at No.1 on Billboard 200, ALTER BRIDGE land in Top 10

green-day-alter-bridgeGreen Day have come in at No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart yet again with ‘Revolution Radio‘. With 95,000 albums moved in its first week, ‘Revolution Radio’ marks Green Day’s third No.1 spot on the Billboard chart. This may be hard to believe, but Green Day didn’t get their first No.1 album in the U.S. until ‘American Idiot‘ hit shelves in 2004. They came close with ‘Dookie‘ and ‘Insomniac‘, but those albums hit their peak at No.2. Green Day’s other No.1 charting album came in 2009 with ‘21st Century Breakdown‘.

The punk-rock trio’s lead single, “Bang Bang”, also hit an incredible Billboard mark, becoming Green Day’s 21st Top 10 hit on the Alternative Songs airplay chart. This places Green Day as the fourth most prolific band in the chart’s history, behind Foo Fighters (with 22), U2 (with 23) and Red Hot Chili Peppers (with 25).

In other Billboard rock news, Alter Bridge enjoyed a substantive Billboard debut with their newest album, ‘The Last Hero‘. Myles, Mark and co. landed at No.8 with 28,000 units moved. This marks Alter Bridge’s first Top 10 spot since releasing their debut album, ‘One Day Remains‘, which hit No.5 back in 2004.

CRADLE OF FILTH to begin recording new album in December

cradle-of-filthBritish extreme metallers Cradle Of Filth will enter the studio in December to begin recording their follow-up to 2015’s ‘Hammer Of The Witches‘ album for a tentative September 2017 release. Dani Filth described Cradle Of Filth’s new material as “very Victorian, gothic horror” with songs that “are seven, eight minutes” in length and that are “a bit proggy [and] fast.”

The writing sessions for Cradle Of Filth’s next album were held in Brno, Czech Republic, which was chosen as a location for several reasons aside from the draw of its elegance and rich architecture; drummer Marthus and second guitarist Ashok live there, plus Brno is also home to Europe’s second largest Ossuary, which is essentially a medieval charnel house filled with fifty thousand skeletons, second only in size to the catacombs in Paris.

Among the tracks that are being considered for inclusion on the upcoming Cradle Of Filth’s CD is “Achingly Beautiful“, which was originally composed during the sessions for ‘Hammer Of The Witches‘ but didn’t make the final cut. Dani previously described the song as “very old-school Cradle Of Filth, featuring a haunting middle section full of soaring female vocals and choir very akin to ‘A Gothic Romance‘ from the album ‘Dusk… And Her Embrace‘.”

Guitar used by Slash in early GUNS N’ ROSES days up for auction

slashBC Rich Warlock used by Slash at first ever Guns N’ Roses gig and also to write classic hits expected to fetch up to $80,000 at auction. The metallic red BC Rich Warlock guitar goes under the hammer at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles on November 5. Slash bought the guitar in 1984 from the Hollywood Music Store in West Hollywood and used it live for the first time at Madame Wong’s West in Santa Monica, California, on June 16 of that year where he performed with pre-GNR group Hollywood Rose alongside Alx Rose and Steven Adler. He later used it during the first ever Guns N’ Roses show with the classic line up of Rose, Adler, Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on June 6, 1985.

slash_guitar-auctionSlash has signed the body of the guitar and also drawn his signature skull and crossbones logo and written “R&Fn R.” It comes with a letter of authenticity also signed by Slash. During 1985 and 1986, Slash performed publicly with the guitar 18 times on stage with Guns N’ Roses, more than any other guitar he used during this period. It was also the guitar he used during his audition for the band Poison in March 1985.

It was used to write classic GN’R hits “Welcome To The Jungle” and “Sweet Child Of Mine“. The Warlock can be heard on the band’s independent EP ‘Live?!*@ Like a Suicide‘ and 1988 release ‘Lies‘. The Warlock was last played in January of 1987 by Slash and stored away in its custom Anvil guitar case ever since. It was acquired from the collection of former GN’R roadie Jason Solon.

Julien’s Auctions say: “It has never been displayed publicly but is well documented through many photographs from that time period as well as many articles and biographies discussing its importance in Slash’s career and Guns N’ Roses’ formation. Its whereabouts had remained a mystery for the last 30 years until now, which has only added another dimension to its folklore. This is truly an iconic museum quality piece of rock’n’roll history.”
