HAMMERFALL have released a new video for the song “Hammer High”

hammerfallSwedish power metal legends Hammerfall have released a new video for the song “Hammer High” (hooray for self-referential power metal song titles!), and the video is as epic as you’d expect it to be : warriors! swords! mountain tops! All in a blue-hewn, surreal landscape and color palette that’s reminiscent of Game of Thrones or 300.

Hammerfall’s prior single, “The Sacred Vow”, has over 200,000 views since its August 26th release. ‘Built to Last‘, Hammerfall’s 10th album, comes out November 4th on Napalm Records.

KERRY KING : Big 4 rivalry is over – except for Dave Mustaine

kerry-kingSlayer guitarist Kerry King has joked that the Big 4 of thrash don’t feel like rivals any more – except for Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine. And he’s admitted his band won’t go on for ever, although he’s not ready to stop just yet.

Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Anthrax became known as the Big 4 during their rise to fame in the 1980s. They didn’t perform together until 2010.

Asked whether he ever felt current tourmates Anthrax were ever viewed as rivals, King tells the Miami New Times : “Yeah, for sure, when the Big 4 came out. When we did Clash Of The Titans tour around 1990, you couldn’t really be at war after that point. We thought we were better than everybody. I would imagine Anthrax probably did too. Dave Mustaine thinks that to this day!”

Max Cavalera wishes he kept SEPULTURA’s name, fired other two “Assholes”

max-iggor-cavaleraIn 1996, Sepultura put out its Roots album, which would end up being the band’s last album with Max Cavalera on vocals and guitar and Iggor Cavalera on drums. Obviously the rift between the Cavalera brothers and Sepultura never quite healed, and in an interview with Metal Insider, Max voices his regret over having not kept the Sepultura name to himself.

He also goes on to say he wishes he’d fired those other “two assholes,” who I’d imagine would be bassist Paolo Jr. and guitarist Andreas Kisser. Unless there were two other assholes I’m not aware of in the band around the time of Roots?

MASTODON going for ‘darker pop’ edge on new album

mastodon_bill-kelliherMastodon’s Bill Kelliher says there won’t be any tracks as “poppy” as The Motherload on their upcoming 7th album.

Describing The Motherload – from last album Once More ‘Round the Sun – as the “poppiest” song Mastodon have ever written, Kelliher says he is going for a darker pop sound on the follow-up.

Mastodon hope to release the album in early 2017 and drummer Brann Dailor previously said they were chasing a “more proggy” sound.

IN FLAMES announces new drummer Joe Rickard

inflames2016In Flames recently revealed plans to release their next album ‘Battles‘ on Nov. 11, but the group had kept the identity of their new drummer under wraps … that is, until now. Over the weekend, the band officially welcomed Joe Rickard to the band with a statement on the drumming position and a video of Rickard introducing himself to the fans and giving a tour around the studio.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Rickard previously played with RED for the better part of a decade. As he explains in the video, he’s done plenty of session work for producer Howard Benson since his exit from RED and was invited to join In Flames in the studio. Apparently that experience went well, as Rickard has joined the band.

Rickard will make his stage debut with In Flames when the band touches down at Knotfest Japan in Tokyo on Nov. 6. The show comes a few days before the Nov. 11 release of Battles.

Can you believe Rush has been around for almost 50 years? Lee and Lifeson first formed the band in 1968, finally completing Rush’s most revered lineup when drummer Neil Peart manned the drum throne in 1974. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson were both born and raised in Toronto, and for their many decades of greatness in the music industry, Mayor John Tory will bestow the two with a key to the city. The guitar and bass duo will also have a park in Willowdale named in their honor.

The members of Rush have recently hinted at retirement. Shortly after Peart suggested he’d no longer be performing live, Lifeson reported Rush had no current plans for writing or touring.

He leaves a massive hole in the lives of everyone who knew him and will be very sorely missed by many”.

Former GUNS N’ ROSES instrumentalist Chris Pitman sues Axl Rose for unpaid debt

chris-pitman-axl-roseWhile Guns N’ Roses have enjoyed a successful reunion with Slash and Duff McKagan returning to the fold this year, one longtime member of Guns N’ Roses not involved with the reunion is coming after Axl Rose for unpaid debts.

According to TMZ, Chris Pitman, who joined the group in 1998 and remained until earlier this year, has filed a lawsuit against Axl Rose over an unpaid debt for services he provided to the group. During his time with the band, Pitman served as a second keyboardist, second bassist, provided backing vocals and added some percussion and programming during the band’s shows. He also did some co-writing with the band over the years.

According to Pitman, he claims that Rose wrote him a promissory note for $125,000 that he was owed for over a year’s worth of work. In the suit, Pitman claims that Rose was supposed to pay up by October 2012, but has failed to do so. Pitman reveals that Rose owes him more than $163,000 now due to interest.

ARCH ENEMY frontwoman announces solo album, featuring KAMELOT and MISFITS members

The project has already been signed to Napalm Records and will be releasing a currently untitled album at some point in 2017.

What’s interesting is that Alissa’s backing band for the album will consist of both past and present members of Arch Enemy, members of Kamelot, and her significant other, Misfits guitarist Doyle Von Frankenstein. Ex-Arch Enemy frontwoman Angela Gossow is managing Alissa, so maybe she’ll make some appearances on the album too? Sounds promising.

SLAYER complete ‘Repentless’ video Trilogy with gore-splattered “Pride in Prejudice”

slayer-pride-prejudiceThe bloodshed continues… Slayer just completed their ‘Repentless’ video trilogy with another over-the-top gorefest for “Pride in Prejudice”.

As extreme thrash pioneers, Slayer already set the bar very high for audio violence. For Repentless, the quartet chose to push the boundaries further with gruesome videos for “Repentless” and “You Against You”. The two clips detail a prisoner’s bloody escape before being wrangled up once again by authorities. In the conclusion of Slayer’s Repentless trilogy, the police take a dark turn, forcing our protagonist (Jason Trost) to make a life-or-death choice in a basement filled with Nazi imagery.

MORBID ANGEL to release New Album + Tour in 2017

Trey-AzagthothMorbid Angel have just announced their return to the studio! The legendary death metal band has signed a fresh deal with UDR Music and will release a new full-length album in 2017.

Morbid Angel’s importance can not be understated in the death metal community. The band’s legendary debut, Altars of Madness, is beloved as one of metal’s most perfect and influential albums. Unfortunately, longtime frontman David Vincent is no longer a member of the band, despite returning to record 2011’s Illud Divinum Insanus, which was heavily criticized by faithful Morbid Angel fans.

At this time, there are no specific details on Morbid Angel’s ninth studio album. Azagthoth and Tucker plan to begin writing and recording soon. Along with a 2017 album, the year will see Morbid Angel return to the road for a tour.

NWOBHM veterans GRIM REAPER return with first new song in nearly 30 years

Grim-Reaper-Walking-in-the-ShadowsClosing in one three decades since the release of the venerable ‘Rock You to Hell’, NWOBHM veterans Grim Reaper (now billed as Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper) have returned with the forthcoming new album, ‘Walking in the Shadows‘, arriving Sept. 23 through Dissonance Records. Singer Grimmett serves as the lone original member of the group and his pipes sound ageless on the title track which can be heard above.

Dusting off the glory days of the early heavy metal scene, “Walking in the Shadows” opens up with riff plucked straight off the streets, followed by a quick guitar solo before continuing on with the feature lick. With gang shouts trading off with Grimmett in the pre-chorus, the tension builds, released by the sing-song chorus of “Take my hand / Follow me / Don’t look back / Walking in the shadows!”.

Grim Reaper originally split up in 1988, only to be resurrected by Grimmett with an entirely new lineup in 2006. Touring over the last decade with members of his solo outfit backing him under the Grim Reaper moniker, Grimmett has finally delivered the album he had been promising fans for quite some time.

The MISFITS confirm Ex-SLAYER drummer DAVE LOMBARDO will be drumming for the Reunion

danzig-lombardoA rumor was started a few weeks back that the big Misfits reunion that would reunite Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only and Doyle would feature legendary former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo behind the kit. That rumor is now confirmed. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Lombardo confirmed what we already knew… he’s getting behind the kit: “The Misfits created the horror punk attitude and had a massive influence on modern rock, punk and metal”, Lombardo tells Rolling Stone. “It was an easy decision for me to join them for these monumental shows. I was honored to be asked, and am very excited to be playing with the band”.

Danzig shares in the excitement: “I first met Dave back in 1988 when Danzig did four shows with Slayer in the U.S., before the first Danzig album was released”, Danzig says. “Dave is one of the best drummers around, and I can’t wait for everyone to see him pounding Misfits songs live for these special shows”. The original Misfits will play this weekend in Denver and the weekend of Sept. 16th in Chicago.

METALLICA make bold statement with new song ‘Hardwired’

Metallica - HardwiredClocking in at a brief three minutes and 11 seconds, “Hardwired” is the shortest Metallica song (from a studio album) since fans got pummeled with Kill ‘Em All‘s “Motorbreath” in 1983. That’s more significant than you might first think; even the thrashiest of tunes from Metallica over the years have ran several minutes in length. Even the shortest and, arguably, the best and most “classic” ‘Tallica tune on 2008’s Death Magnetic came in at a shade over five minutes. What does that mean?

Well, for starters, we think it means Metallica are making a statement with their 11th studio album, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct. Take for instance the first taste of new music fans got in 2008. Ahead of the release of Death Magnetic, radio stations received the nearly eight-minute opus “The Day That Never Comes”.

It concerns the story behind “Embers,” specifically the death of Morton’s infant daughter Madalyn Grace Morton. The piece is not only incredibly well-written, it’s absolutely heartbreaking.

25 Years Ago : METALLICA release ‘The Black Album’

Metallica-Black AlbumIt’s one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, but Metallica’s self-titled disc (aka “The Black Album”) marked a major turning point for the band long before it was released on Aug. 12, 1991. It was the first solid indication Metallica were no longer interested in writing pure thrash metal and wanted to reach a much larger, more mainstream audience.

The success of the “One” video from “…And Justice for All” helped Metallica rise to the top of the metal heap. At the risk of alienating some of its most loyal fans the band decided to join forces with uber-producer Bob Rock and make a slick, polished album full of more traditional anthems and ballads that were still heavy, but strayed significantly from the band’s roots.

Metallica started generating riffs and melodies for “The Black Album” while they were on tour for “…And Justice for All”. Many of the songs were solidified in the summer of 1990 and on Aug. 13, Metallica recorded demos for “Enter Sandman”, “Nothing Else Matters” and “Wherever I May Roam”. The last demo the band recorded before entering the studio was “Sad But True”.

Kerry King says Tom Araya’s future SLAYER plans “Very Unclear”

Slayer - Tom ArayaIn a recent interview, Slayer guitarist Kerry King said frontman Tom Araya‘s future plans with the band remain “unclear”. When asked by EMP Rock Invasion about Tom Araya’s recent hints that he may be ready to retire King responded : “He’s very unclear. That’s just how he is. I don’t know if he likes holding his cards in his pocket or what. I mean, I don’t have an answer. I’m holding off a lot of things I wanna do at home, just ’cause I don’t know if I’m gonna be working in two years. I’m gonna be working, hopefully in Slayer. Yeah, dude. What else am I gonna do? I came out of high school and fucking went on tour. [Laughs]”

This obviously led to the question of is there an end in sight for Slayer : “Not for me. Not for me, man — especially on such a good record.” The interviewer then joked if another 35 years are in store for the band and King responded “Well, I don’t know about that. I’ll take another record or two.”
