///  Date : 28th April, 2017  ///

Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde have reunited! The guitarist has rejoined the Prince of Darkness’ band and they’ll be together onstage for Ozzy’s upcoming 2017 shows! It was 30 years ago that Ozzy Osbourne and Zakk Wylde first teamed up, taking over for the legendary Jake E. Lee. Zakk became an icon in his own right through virtuosic guitar work and his later career with Black Label Society.

Zakk’s had a scattered history with Ozzy, playing with The Boss from 1987-1995, in 1998, from 2001-2004 and from 2006-2009. Wylde has performed on on five Ozzy albums including ‘No Rest For the Wicked‘ and ‘No More Tears‘, along with three live albums.

In addition to Wylde, Osbourne’s band will continue to feature Blasko on bass, Tommy Clufetos on drums and Adam Wakeman on keyboards. Zakk’s return means guitarist Gus G is out of the band.

Latest NewsIvan Moody : I’m not leaving FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
///  Date : 24th April, 2017  ///

Five Finger Death Punch vocalist Ivan Moody says he’s not leaving the band – despite reports late last week that he was quitting. In an interview with radio station 106.7 KBPI, Moody revealed that he would be working on a side project called Villain – leading some websites to report that he was walking away from FFDP. But amid swirling speculation, Moody has issued a statement to set the record straight.

Moody says : “It’s no secret that this has been a tough year for me and for my bandmates in Five Finger Death Punch. When you put everything you have into making music, both on and off the stage, it can be very frustrating when the music you work so hard to create is not allowed to see the light of day. I know we share this frustration with our fans too, who have come to expect new music from us – fans who mean everything to us.

It is true that Five Finger Death Punch has come to a crossroads – and that crossroads is we’re all at a place where we will never again let someone or something hold us back from making music for our fans. The lawsuit by Prospect Park holding our new album hostage has taken a toll on me. I was in a rehabilitation facility when Prospect Park decided to sue the band last year, and that was very difficult for me to handle all at once.”

Latest NewsSABATON make their ‘Last Stand’ in New York city
///  Date : 22nd April, 2017  ///

Swedish metal heroes Sabaton has performed at PlayStation Theater before but never as a headliner — this time was different. The group is touring the United States in support of their latest album, ‘The Last Stand‘ and packed the venue, in the heart of Times Square, as thousands of fans donned army pants and aviator glasses, ready for battle.

Speaking of battle, the night began with the Finnish metallers of Battle Beast who ripped through a powerful set. Next up were symphonic metal act Leaves’ Eyes, who hit the stage with new singer Elina Siirala as her soprano vocal range soared. With a massive army tank and other military items like boxes of ammo and camo nets, the stage was set for combat. The headliners, Sabaton, hit the stage with their upbeat anthem “Ghost Division” and immediately demonstrated their powder keg energy with ceaseless intensity.

The crowd’s excitement was matched by frontman Joakim Broden who addressed the crowd, expressing his enthusiasm to play for over 90 minutes for them. The band also cranked out songs “Blood of Bannockburn” and the title track from their new record. Meanwhile, fans crowdsurfed and emphatically sang along to well-known battle cries “Carolus Rex” and “Primo Victoria”.

The night ended with sweat, sore muscles and hoarse voices for fans. Sabaton powered through their encore which consisted of “Swedish Pagans,” “Shiroyama” and “To Hell and Back”. It’s not every day you get to see power battle metal with some serious historic war themes, making Sabaton a truly unique experience live.

///  Date : 10th April, 2017  ///

Congrats are in order for Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who each heard their names called when the Billboard Music Awards nominations were revealed. The nominations take into account digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement, with Billboard monitoring the data throughout the year. And while many of the nominees fall outside of the hard rock and metal spectrum, the three acts broke through to be nominated.

Guns N’ Roses snagged three nominations. They’re up for Top Duo/Group, where they square off against acts from all genres with their competition being Coldplay, the Chainsmokers, Florida Georgia Line and Twenty One Pilots. They also scored a nomination in the Top Touring Artist category where they’ll battle Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band for the honor. Latest NewsBLACK SABBATH to release documentary on final hometown Concerts
///  Date : 09th April, 2017  ///

Though Black Sabbath have taken their final bow as a touring and recording act, guitarist Tony Iommi remains busy with plenty of plans ahead of him. In a new interview, Iommi revealed Black Sabbath will be releasing a documentary on their final shows in Birmingham, as well as a possible live album. Iommi also mentions a potential solo album, for which he has “bags” of riffs.

NBC recently caught up with Iommi to discuss his contribution to the choral composition “How Good It Is” that the guitarist wrote for a cathedral in his hometown of Birmingham. “It really wasn’t anything to do with religion,” Iommi said. “I don’t follow any religious path… religiously. It just seemed like a nice thing to do. It was really nice to work with a choir and to do something for our city.”

Along with penning a piece for the CSI television series, Iommi himself is currently mixing the sound from the final Black Sabbath gigs in Birmingham, but not just for a possible live album, it’s for a full-on documentary. “We’ll actually be doing a documentary,” he said. “My job at the moment is to have a listen to what we’ve done.”

With Black Sabbath finished in the studio and Ozzy Osbourne setting the stage for a potential solo album and tour, Iommi is pondering a new solo album for himself. We haven’t gotten an Iommi solo LP since ‘Fused‘ came out in 2005, and the legendary guitarist says he’s got “bags” ready for the prospective solo release.

Latest NewsDIMMU BORGIR putting finishing touches on ‘Epic’, ‘Symphonic’ and ‘Brutal’ new Album
///  Date : 08th April, 2017  ///

Guitarist Sven Atle Kopperud (a.k.a. Silenoz) of Norwegian symphonic black metallers Dimmu Borgir spoke to Metal Shock Finland about the progress of the mixing sessions for the band’s long-awaited follow-up to 2010’s ‘Abrahadabra‘ album. “We’re in the middle of it at the moment, but I would say it has even more variation than any of our previous albums,” he said. “It’s more epic and symphonic, it’s more brutal, it’s more black metal, it’s more primitive. It includes everything that we are known for, and what’s even better about it is that it has just come so easy. The challenge for us is always to shave off the stuff that we think is not good enough. So coming up with material is never really any problem; it’s just to figure out which parts to use for songs. That’s the challenge — to shave off the fat.”

In terms of the actual songwriting for the new album, Silenoz revealed that “I‘ve done all the lyrics again, but for the musical part, I think we managed to split that pretty much three ways between Galder [guitar], Shagrath [vocals] and myself.”

While Silenoz couldn’t provide a firm release date for the new Dimmu Borgir album, he predicted that the record would arrive before the end of the year. “If we keep somewhat to the schedule that we have in mind, I would personally estimate late summer, early fall release, if everything goes as planned,” he said. “But it also comes down to timing and what the label thinks is smart strategically.”

Latest NewsANTHRAX is ‘Ready’ to play more ‘Big Four’ shows with METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER
///  Date : 05th April, 2017  ///

Frank Bello says that Anthrax “would love” to play more shows featuring the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.

The four influential acts played together for the first time in history on June 16, 2010 in front of 81,000 fans at the Sonisphere festival at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland and shared a bill again for six more shows as part of the Sonisphere series that same year. They reunited again for several dates in 2011, including the last “Big Four” concert, which was held on September 14, 2011 at Yankee Stadium in New York City. Since then, Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax have played a number of shows together, including the 2013 Soundwave festival in Australia. They also performed at the 2014 Heavy MTL festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Speaking to KNAC.COM, the Anthrax bassist said about the possibility of more “Big Four” shows in the future : “Talk to Metallica. We’re ready. All the other bands that were involved will tell you it was one of the best things that ever happened for them. Just the camaraderie, and for the fans, that was a good value for your buck to see the four bands that grew up together in the scene. I think that was a great idea by Metallica. We’re all friends and we all get along really well, I think Metallica knows that we would all be in on it again because it was such a great experience. So many people are asking for it and every interview asks about it. They want to see it and we’d love to be part of it.”

Latest NewsIRON MAIDEN’s Dickinson condemns small venue closures
///  Date : 03rd April, 2017  ///

Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has condemned the closure of small music venues in the UK. Manchester’s Roadhouse, Leeds’ Cockpit and The Arches in Glasgow are just a few of the venues that have been forced to close their doors in recent years – and with Cardiff music hot spot Dempseys now being turned into a sports bar, Dickinson says more should be done to protect smaller clubs.

He tells Wales Online : “Sadly that seems to be happening in a lot of places. It’s the gentrification of the city centre, the dodgy hangouts which are really cool which kids like. We wouldn’t have been able to start out if there hadn’t been venues like that. The good thing is you don’t need a lot to have a place where you can have a racket and have people turn up. Small venues are indispensable to bands – always have been and always will be. I think we miss a trick in this country and some countries in Europe do it better in that they protect their social infrastructure. And pubs and small venues are part of that social infrastructure.”

Latest NewsPARADISE LOST begins recording new Album
///  Date : 28th March, 2017  ///

British gothic metal pioneers Paradise Lost have entered Orgone Studios in Woburn, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom to begin recording their new album for a tentative late 2017 release via Nuclear Blast. The follow-up to 2015’s ‘The Plague Within‘ is once again being helmed by Jaime Gomez Arellano, who has previously worked with Ghost, Cathedral and Turisas, among others.

Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting four of its five original members, the band is widely credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with its sophomore album, ‘Gothic‘ (1991). Through the years, Paradise Lost has changed its style effectively and reinvented itself again and again. They elbowed their way from their original melodic death metal sound on their debut, ‘Lost Paradise‘ (1990) to the classic ‘Icon‘ (1993) and more experimental ‘One Second‘ (1997). Finally they went back to the roots with their most recent release, ‘The Plague Within‘, achieving some of the best reviews of their career.

Latest NewsThe new MORBID ANGEL album is definitely Death Metal, says Steve Tucker
///  Date : 18th March, 2017  ///

Morbid Angel has previously confirmed that it’ll be releasing a new album this year, leaving fans hoping that it’ll be better than 2011’s ‘Illud Divinum Insanus‘ trainwreck. The new lineup bodes well for the material, featuring Steve Tucker on bass and vocals for the first time since 2003’s ‘Heretic‘, drummer Scott Fuller (Annihilated, ex-Abysmal Dawn) and guitarist Dan Vadim Von.

In an interview with The Metal Magdalene With Jet, Tucker confirmed what everyone wanted to hear – Morbid Angel will go back to being death metal in 2017. Tucker also compares the writing process to the ‘Gateways To Annihilation‘ album, which definitely adds to that excitement!

“I’ve said it before — I’m a death metal guy, so, for me, it’s gonna be a death metal album; if I’m on it, it’s death metal. So it was just about making a Morbid Angel album. It was really about coming in with something new, something fresh, but yet it still being Morbid Angel. Really, honestly, we didn’t approach this any differently than any of the other albums I was involved in except for maybe Formulas Fatal To The Flesh, which Trey wrote all the music, all the lyrics and things like that. But this was done more similar to maybe Gateways To Annihilation, where everybody had their contribution.

Trey wrote a bunch of songs, I wrote songs, Scotty contributed some ideas. There was a lot of back-and-forth. In the end, it has to become a Morbid Angel song. And at this point, I feel that it’s very much a Morbid Angel album.”

Some auditions are being held as we speak, and we will get back to you with news on the matter as soon as we know more.”

There was a recently talk about the Megadeth track “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due“, and how literally everyone is playing the riff wrong. Mustaine called one dude out on Twitter for having inaccurate tabs, and it turns out everyone else had been playing it like that was well.

Even better, some people were kind of taking issue with Dave regarding his correction… because y’know, he’s not the guy who would know how to play his own song. Anyway, here’s how you play the song. Stop sucking at it.

Iron Maiden just may have figured out a way to keep ticket scalpers at bay, as the band’s 95% success rate would have you believe.

On the band’s current tour of the UK, fans cannot purchase a ticket to a show without going through a rigorous security process. This includes scalper barriers such as multiple ID verifications, the promotion of “paperless ticketing”, and printing purchaser names on physical tickets. Despite these hurdles, the band has sold 100,000 tickets thus far and achieved a 95% decline in secondhand sales of tickets, as compared to its 2011 UK tour.

Latest NewsMEGADETH in early stages of ‘Dystopia’ follow-up
///  Date : 28th February, 2017  ///

Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine says he and guitarist Kiko Loureiro have begun early work on what will be their 16th studio album. They launched ‘Dystopia‘ in January last year – a release which saw them pick up a Grammy for Best Metal Performance at this month’s ceremony in Los Angeles.

And while all band members have busy schedules including tour dates across the world and the Megadeth Boot Camp, Mustaine says they’ve begun kicking around ideas for Dystopia’s follow-up.

He tells Full Metal Jackie (via Loudwire) : “We’re trying to start the songwriting process this year while we’re out on the road, which will be good for us to start putting pen to paper and writing stuff. Kiko and I have actually been talking a lot about it the last couple weeks, sending files back and forth and so on and so forth, which is exciting for me because that’s what makes me tick is writing music. When I see new files coming back and forth through my email it’s like, ‘Yes.’ It’s like Christmas.”

Latest NewsMETALLICA’s James Hetfield on Chinese censorship
///  Date : 25th February, 2017  ///

When bands perform in China, it is no secret that they must submit their song lyrics to the government, who then return to the band with a list of songs they can and can’t play as well as allowing certain songs as long as the lyrics are altered to something permissible. Metallica‘s recent trek to the country was no different, though James Hetfield seemed nonplussed by being forbidden from playing classics like “Master of Puppets”.

In an interview with South Morning China Post, the frontman was more than understanding about the censorship, stating, “Why shouldn’t you respect their culture when you’re there as a guest and you’ve been invited to play? We want to be respectful and just because we do things differently, it doesn’t mean it should be forced upon [others].”

Hetfield is optimistic about returning to China and having the ability to play not just “Master of Puppets”, but other exclusions like “One” (in Shanghai) and “Hardwired”. “But hopefully we’ll keep coming back and they’ll realize we’re not a threat politically and we have no agenda except to cross boundaries with music and let people enjoy the songs,” he continued. “We’re not trying to bring a secret message to anybody.”

Latest NewsMEGADETH wins ‘Best Metal Performance‘ GRAMMY Award
///  Date : 13th February, 2017  ///

Megadeth was honored with a Grammy in the ‘Best Metal Performance‘ category in the pre-telecast ceremony at the 59th annual Grammy Awards, which was held yesterday (Sunday, February 12) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Megadeth was nominated for “Dystopia“, the title track of its 2016 album.

As Megadeth approached the stage to accept the award, the house band inexplicably played the song “Master Of Puppets” from Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine’s former band Metallica.

In his acceptance speech, Mustaine said : “Fantastic! Only took twelve tries to get this. Last time we were here, we were talking to Kenny G, and he asked me how many times we were here, and he goes, ‘Well, eleven isn’t that bad.’ And I said, ‘How many times did it take you?’ And he said, Twenty-one.’ And I was, like, ‘Oh, my god. If it takes twenty-one times… I don’t know if I’ll live that long.'”

Mustaine continued : “I wanna thank Jesus Christ, I wanna thank my wife, my children, all the band’s wives and kids, I wanna thank our management, our label, our agent, our attorney, our crew, all of you, especially the metal community. I think it’s a little weird that we ended up being category 69, but somebody’s got a sense of humor.”

The nominees in the ‘Best Metal Performance‘ category were as follows :

BARONESS – “Shock Me”
GOJIRA – “Slivera”
KORN – “Rotting in Vain”
MEGADETH – “Dystopia”
PERIPHERY – “The Price Is Wrong”

Latest NewsMETALLICA’s Kirk Hammett on more Big 4 shows : “I personally see it happening again”
///  Date : 12th February, 2017  ///

The ‘Big 4‘ concerts featuring the joint package of thrash’s best – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax, was one of the downright coolest moments in metal history as they played select concerts around the world. There’s been talk among both fans and the musicians who took part in the event of future Big 4 shows and Metallica axeman Kirk Hammett has now thrown his hat into the ring of optimism.

As a guest on Scott Ian‘s SiriusXM show Never Meet Your Heroes, Hammett first explained how this momentous concert idea even took shape. “That term Big 4 was created by the press and we kept on seeing it and seeing it: Big 4, Big 4,” he began. “And then, one day, it was something to the extent of, ‘Let’s get all the original metal bands together to do a tour like we used to do back in the day’; we’d all tour with each other.”

The plans got shaved down to just the Big 4 and Hammett said, “It was just, like, ‘Yeah, we absolutely should tour together and celebrate our long, storied careers.’”

Latest NewsGUNS N’ ROSES joined by Angus Young for two AC/DC covers in Australia
///  Date : 11th February, 2017  ///

Guns N’ Roses and AC/DC represent two of the biggest rock bands of all time and combined they look to be even more unstoppable. For the second time, Angus Young hopped onstage with GN’R to bust out a couple AC/DC classics, this time in his home country of Australia.

The band mixed in a bunch of cover songs per usual, playing classics from Pink Floyd, The Who and, most importantly here, AC/DC at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Feb. 10. Young took the stage after “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and together, they ran through “Whole Lotta Rosie” (video below) and “Riff Raff” (video below).

Latest NewsAS I LAY DYING’s Tim Lambesis has been Free for Two Months, getting Married in April
///  Date : 10th February, 2017  ///

Yesterday, we learned the shocking news that As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis had been released from prison. Lambesis served only two and a half years on a six-year sentence after he was arrested and eventually convicted of solicitation of murder for attempting to hire a hitman to murder his now ex-wife.

Yesterday, guitarist George Lynch revealed that Lambesis had been out for a while. Lynch’s daughter was engaged to Lambesis’ former bandmate, guitarist Nick Hipa, which is how Lynch has the info. Lynch said “He’s out, he’s got a mega record deal, he’s got a book deal, everything’s lined up for him. I mean, he’s gonna skate through life. Everybody else is suffering. His wife is living in fear, his children are living in fear. His band doesn’t have a pot to piss in.” This, of course, speaks to the fact that the former members of As I Lay Dying quit the band due to Lambesis’ actions and now are struggling to get their new band, Wovenwar, off the ground, while Lambesis is using the publicity of his crime to secure a better career for himself.

AltPress reached out the California Department Of Corrections And Rehabilitation and a representative confirmed Lambesis was “discharged Dec. 17, 2016. He was discharged to the Division of Adult Parole Operations.” Lambesis is wasting no time moving ahead with his life. In the comments of yesterday’s Lambesis post, Lambesis had a public wedding registry set up, with the scheduled date of marriage being April 29, 2017 in Carlsband, CA.

Earlier today, Lady Gaga tweeted a video of commercial for the ceremony this Sunday announcing that she would be joining the legendary Bay Area thrashers for what is sure to be a must-see performance.

Gaga is no stranger to heavy metal. She has said on numerous occasions that Iron Maiden changed her life. She loves Black Sabbath (her favorite song is “Black Sabbath”), she lounges around in metal shirts, hangs out with metal gods and randomly crashes metal shows at SXSW from time to time.

Latest NewsOBITUARY’s new song “Turned To Stone” is pretty Sludgy
///  Date : 07th February, 2017  ///

Obituary‘s self-titled new album will be out on March 17 via Relapse Records, and unlike the debut single from the album, “Turned To Stone” is much slower and crushing. At least until about the halfway mark, at which point things take a turn for double bass drum galore and whammy bar-laden solos, which seems to be where the band’s new material excels.

Latest NewsMETALLICA postpone Copenhagen show due to James Hetfield’s health
///  Date : 05th February, 2017  ///

The other shoe has fallen for Metallica. After the band struggled through a performance Friday in Copenhagen in which James Hetfield asked to shut things down early after admitting he didn’t “sound good”, the band has postponed Sunday’s show (Feb. 5) at the venue allowing the ailing Hetfield to recover.

In a post to their Facebook page, the band stated, “We’re very disappointed to have to share with you that unfortunately as Saturday has progressed, James’ health, and specifically his throat, is not improving and he is under strict doctor’s orders to not sing one single note. So sadly we have to report that we will be postponing tomorrow’s show at the Royal Arena until Sept 2, 2017.”

The band will honor tickets for the postponed show when they return in September, but they are also encouraging fans who traveled to Denmark to contact Ticketmaster Denmark to see if there are replacement tickets available for the Feb. 7 or 9 shows the band is still intending on playing at the venue. And for those unable to attend one of the other dates, refunds will be available through March 1.

Latest NewsOzzy Osbourne on BLACK SABBATH’s farewell show : ‘I’ve been tearful’
///  Date : 03rd February, 2017  ///

As Black Sabbath prepare for their farewell show this weekend, at least one member is choked up at the prospect of the band’s final gig. “My emotions are flying all over the place,” Ozzy Osbourne told the BBC during rehearsals at Birmingham’s Genting Arena, where the band will play its final show tomorrow night. “Since I’ve got to this building today, I’ve been happy, I’ve been tearful. Let’s see what happens.”

Black Sabbath kicked off their last tour, called The End, more than a year ago. After circling the globe, it wraps up this week with two shows in the English city in which they got their start in 1968. Saturday’s performance will be their last, and Osbourne hinted that there may be a surprise or two for that final concert. “I’ve got to say something, but I’ve nothing rehearsed,” he said. “I’m no good at speeches.”

Osbourne told the BBC he was feeling sentimental about the end of the band’s touring days, recalling an early gig in Birmingham and thinking, “This’ll be good for a couple of years – drink a few beers and have a jam. But it was the beginning of the most incredible adventure you could think of. I’ve had the best life out of it. One of the proudest things I have in my heart is the fact that Black Sabbath wasn’t a band that was created by some big mogul. It was four guys who said let’s have a dream, and it came true beyond our wildest expectations.”

Latest NewsANTHRAX’s Scott Ian : Political unrest is great for art
///  Date : 01st February, 2017  ///

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian says current political climate will result in “a lot of great heavy music” over the next 4 years. They are currently gearing up for a long run of tour dates to celebrate 30 years since the release of their classic ‘Among The Living‘ album.

And while some have been quick to criticise the current state of the music industry, Ian believes the scene is “strong and healthy” and will only improve due to the political unrest across the world.

Speaking exclusively to Metal Hammer, Ian says : “I think there’s gonna be a lot of great heavy music being made in the next four years. Political unrest is great for art. The Big Four came out of the Reagan era in the States. The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal came out of the Thatcher era, if I’m not mistaken. So with Trump and the political climate in the world right now, it should definitely be great for heavy music.”
